Use seat data for smarter choice filling
A branch with more seats is not automatically easy. A branch with fewer seats is not automatically impossible. Your rank, quota, state, college preference, and budget all matter.

Overview — DCI Approved Total MDS Seats in India
When students start preparing for NEET MDS counselling, most of them first ask about branch preference. Endodontics, orthodontics, oral surgery, prosthodontics, periodontics, pedodontics, oral medicine, oral pathology, and public health dentistry all have different demand levels and different seat availability.
In my experience, seat availability helps you understand the broad competition. But it should not be used blindly. A branch with more seats may still be competitive if demand is high. A branch with fewer seats may still be possible if your rank, budget, state preference, and college options are aligned properly.
My quick advice
Use the MDS seat list as a planning tool, not as the final decision tool. Your final college list should be made only after checking rank, branch preference, fee structure, college quality, location, patient flow and counselling rules.
1. MDS Seats in India — College & Department Wise Table
Below is the MDS seat table for India. You can use it to check colleges and department-wise seat availability. I have removed the old static table and added the updated dynamic seat table shortcode here.
MDS Seats in India
Note: Seat information should always be checked along with the latest counselling notifications, official seat matrix and college-specific updates before final choice filling.
2. How I Use MDS Seat Data During Counselling
When I review a student’s MDS options, I do not look at seat numbers alone. I use seat data along with branch demand, rank range, counselling type, state preference, fee affordability, and college quality.
Branch Demand
Some branches remain competitive even when the number of seats looks comfortable.
College Quality
Seat availability is useless if the department does not match your clinical or academic expectations.
Fee Structure
A seat is useful only if the total cost is practical for the family.
Round Strategy
The same seat may behave differently in Round 1, Round 2, mop-up and stray vacancy.
My practical rule: Do not choose a branch only because there are many seats. Do not reject a branch only because there are fewer seats. Match the seat data with your rank, category, budget and career direction.
Need help making your MDS branch and college list?
Your rank, branch preference, budget, and state options should be reviewed together before choice filling.
3. Frequently Asked Questions
The total number of MDS seats can change whenever official approvals, renewals, withdrawals or counselling seat matrices change. Use the seat table on this page as a planning reference and verify the latest official seat matrix before final choice filling.
Use the seat list to understand which colleges offer your preferred branch and how seat availability is distributed. But do not make your choice list based only on seat count. Rank, branch demand, fee structure, college quality and counselling rules must be checked together.
Not always. A branch may have more seats but also higher demand. I always advise students to compare seat count with previous counselling trends, branch popularity, college quality and fee structure.
No seat table should be treated as final unless it is published by the official counselling authority for that admission year and round. College approvals and seat availability can change, so always verify with official notifications before locking choices.
Yes. I can review your NEET MDS rank, category, branch preference, budget, state preference and college priorities to help you prepare a practical counselling strategy.
My Final Note
I have personally verified collected the seat data from the official DCI website. I think this table helped you in getting a rough idea about the seat intake for MDS in each department. If you found this information useful, please do share it people in need.
If you are having any questions, you can comment it below and I will try my best to reply as soon as possible.

Hello sir
Good day !
My daughter has completed BDS from Manipal college , Manipal . Now she has attended today’s NEET exam .
However being a mother i have question that is it worth to complete MDS for a daughter , because gain 3 years of course will delay other priorities of life.
Also is it possible to get admission for MDS private college. If yes , which college shall be preferred .
Dear Jayshree,
Hope you are doing well.
It is really worth doing MDS if your daughter is really interested. Because, in the coming years there will be some preferences given to MDS as the field of dentistry is transforming rapidly in terms of quality.
Yes, you get an MDS seat in private college if your daughter qualifies NEET-MDS exam.
And about the colleges, it completely depends on different factors like – department preference, budget, location etc.
I will give you a call and explain in detail about the same.
Hello sir,

Hello sir . My brother got AIR 1788 . Category UR state – MP .
1. Is there any chance of govt. Dental college?
2. Is PG from private college is better than opening your own clinic?
Dear Mr.Karthik,
Congrats on qualifying NEET-MDS!
1. Chances are very low for government dental college, but you can apply different quotas in states like Karnataka for clinical department in best college and there are chances for you to secure a seat.
2. Let it be government or private, it completely depends on the knowledge and clinical skills which she acquire. I know who are successful as a dentist after doing MDS from Private dental college and also dentists who are not that successful after doing MDS from government dental college.
Hope this helps!
